The City of Decatur sustained significant damage in the wake of storms that hit the city on April 3, 2018. Seventy to eighty mph winds ravaged Decatur neighborhoods, leaving at least 160 homes and 14 businesses damaged or destroyed. The cost of residential damage for the uninsured or underinsured is easily projected to exceed $2.5 million, while damages to businesses are expected to reach an additional $2 million or more.
The President of Morgan County’s Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) chapter, met with Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling and members of both the Decatur City Council and Morgan County Commission, where VOAD, with United Way of Morgan County as its fiscal agent, was commissioned to start long-term recovery efforts for those affected by the recent storms in our community. As our county’s VOAD membership is a diverse group of non-profits and faith-based organizations experienced in immediate and long-term disaster relief, they were tasked with leveraging volunteer and financial resources to make the greatest possible impact on those least able to recover from the storms on their own.
The Volunteer Center of Morgan County, an affiliate of the national Hands on Network, is already using its volunteer management database to match the individuals and groups ready to help with those who need their assistance; and United Way’s 2-1-1 Information and Referral service has been connecting residents to resources since before the storm hit. They will continue those services throughout the recovery, as VOAD keeps the public informed through traditional media, social media, and the pledged use of digital billboards.
We are prepared to accept donations of cash and building materials to help fund repairs to owner occupied homes for low income residents with little or no insurance coverage. With this funding, VOAD, partnering with the City of Decatur and other community resources, can help ensure that appropriate repairs are made by licensed contractors for the safety and security of the families so greatly impacted on April 3rd.
